Are STRAFFORD motorhomes self sufficient with no power hook-up?
Are STRAFFORD motorhomes self sufficient with no power hook-up?
Simple answer is YES providing you have booked a gas refill bottle.
Our motorhomes are all self sufficient for use in an off grid situation but with certain things to bear in mind.
The 240v sockets on the motorhome will not work as a motorhome will not produce 240v so things like hairdryers and electric kettles will not work.
Electricity – When off grid the motorhomes will run on the leisure battery which is a secondary battery independent from the engine battery. This leisure battery will power the water pump for the kitchen sink, the bathroom sink, the bathroom shower and the WC flush. The motorhomes all have USB sockets of varying amounts which will keep all your mobile phones charged up. Most of our models are fitted with a solar panel so when sunny the solar will keep your leisure battery topped up. You can check the amount of charge you have on the motorhome control panel. If it’s not sunny you can start the engine battery for around 20 minutes on tick over to replenish your 12v leisure battery.
Do I need a generator? – No unless you must have 240v. We now offer silent lithium power banks with extra solar panels with a maximum output of 1.7kw which will power a travel (low KW) hairdryer / hair straighteners or a small coffee machine. 2 -3kw salon style hairdryers will not work as you would need a huge generator or lithium power bank to power them. If this is what you need please ask to be added to your order and your 240v KW desired output.
Gas – When off grid you will definitely need a full gas bottle which can be booked with us to fit before your departure. The gas bottle will power your fridge, power your boiler for hot water and heating, power the gas hob for cooking and hot drinks (using a traditional kettle or pan) and power your oven.
Water – Most of our coach built models carry 100 litres of water plus 100 litres waste water storage (small camper van models 60 litres) which we have found from experience will provide around 8 short nice hot showers providing you switch the water off in between wetting down and rinsing off. It is always a good idea to be near a water supply to refill to avoid running out of water.
Toilet – The toilet cassette which holds your black waste has a 17 litre capacity and we have found from experience 2 person can last well but it really depends on how much you flush and obviously depends on how much it is used. We recommend emptying daily into an approved emptying point but can also be emptied into a standard toilet if the owner agrees to this.
